12 Modern Movie Gems Under 90 Minutes

11. Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil

Runtime: 89 minutes Is there really anything left to make fun of in the slasher genre? Hasn't it all been substantially ridiculed by now? These are the questions Tucker & Dale vs. Evil eradicates by the end of its sparse duration. Because apparently there are some things Scream, Club Dread, Scary Movie, Scream 2, Seed of Chucky, Scary Movie 2, and Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon hadn't tackled yet. The plot is brilliant in its stupid simplicity: a group of preppy college kids on Spring Break mistake two best friends as murderous hillbillies, and this misunderstanding leads the kids to farcically kill themselves in acts of "self-defense" against the genial duo. Tucker & Dale sprints through a checklist of slasher flick tropes, upending them in euphoric fashion. By the film's end, it's accomplished its central goal: make viewers feel like an idiot for ever taking those genre movies seriously. And it does so with a big, toothless smile.
