12 Most Desperate Oscar Grab Movies Of 2015

12. Suffragette

Why It's Desperate: It's a period drama about an emotional, important subject, is written by an award-winning screenwriter who has penned a few Oscar-grab films before (The Iron Lady, The Invisible Woman), and boasts three highly Oscar-friendly actresses in Carey Mulligan, Meryl "they'll nominate her for reading the phone book" Streep and Helena Bonham Carter. This film couldn't be any more of a prestige pic if it tried. Will It Succeed?: Not a chance. The film has been broadly praised but it doesn't seem strong enough in any one area to actually get much awards love, and the film made the criminal mistake of playing-up Streep's presence in marketing only for her to appear in one single, two-minute scene. It could snag a few below-the-line nods for, say, Costume Design or Makeup & Hairstyling, but as far as actual awards go, it's likely walking home empty-handed.
