As much as we might enjoy the belly laughs a good comedy can bring about or that feeling of superior intelligence and taste we get after seeing a weird arthouse film, you’ve got to admit there’s nothing quite as cathartic as a good old tear-jerker that gets you call choked up.

That’s why the upcoming selection of scenes are so powerful. Each emotionally devastating in their own way – some straight up harrowing, others tinged with a bittersweet kind of happiness – they’re scenes that allow us to feel the depths of human pain without the inconvenience of having to go through real-life heartache. Plus, there’s nothing like a good cry eh?

So, get your handkerchiefs at the ready, make sure your mascara is of the waterproof variety, and grab a loved one and hold them close because it’s about to get emotional with the most heartstring-tugging, tear-jerking movie moments of 2017.

12. Wonder Woman – Steve’s Noble Sacrifice

Warner Bros.

One of the great things about Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman – the first female-led superhero movie since the ill-fated likes of Catwoman and Elektra – is that we’re left with no doubt as to who is the real hero of the story. It’s Wonder Woman in case you didn’t figure it out.

That’s not to say the movie is female-focused to the point of feminazism though. In fact, one of Wonder Woman’s most touching elements is Diana’s romantic subplot with American pilot Steve Trevor as their relationship blossoms from flirtation to true love.

In fact, it’s Diana’s obvious affection for Steve and her reaction over his sacrifice that makes his eventual death all the more heart-breaking. Well, that and the fact he gave his own life by hijacking a German bomber plane loaded to the brim with super-deadly mustard gas and blowing it up before it could obliterate London. Yeah, that was a bit of a tear-jerker too.

Helen Jones hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
