12 Most Emotionally Devastating Movie Moments Of 2017
9. Coco – Remember Me
After the disappointment of Cars 3, Pixar returned to form in late 2017 with Coco. A richly animated celebration of Mexican culture and familial ties, the warm-hearted and moving fantasy centres around the Mexican holiday Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) and a young, aspiring musician named Miguel who must solve a generations-old mystery to unite his family members both living and dead.
The movie’s emotional climax comes when Miguel plays his great-grandmother Coco a sweet little ballad called Remember Me that her estranged father (and Miguel’s great-great-grandfather) penned decades ago so she would not forget him.
Though a simple scene at heart, it’s a beautifully affecting moment that tugs more at our heartstrings with each strum of Miguel’s guitar. It’s Pixar at their finest and if Coco doesn’t earn the studio its ninth Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in a couple of months, we’ll eat our hats.
