12 Most Heart-Stopping Sci-Fi Movie Scenes Ever

4. Subway Scene - Cloverfield

Another entry from JJ Abrams with this scary as hell scene from his found footage film Cloverfield. The inventive style for an action blockbuster proved to be more than just a gimmick thanks to Abrams' ability to use the shaky cam style to bring some fresh and innovative scares.

The scene which proves to be a real heart-stopper occurs when our protagonists find themselves walking through the New York subway. Having nearly got caught in the crossfire of a battle between the alien creature and the National Guard, the crew of Rob, Hud, Lily and Marlena make their way through the pitch black tunnel when they start to hear some peculiar noises.

As Hud continues to film, he captures footage of some parasitic creatures crawling along the roof of the subway. The remainder of the scene plays out like an extreme version of The Blair Witch Project, the screams and frantic running of our protagonists contrasting with the surreal screams of the parasites. The scene utilises the trait of keeping us in the dark, while the brief sighting of the parasite reminds the audience that they are definitely not alone.

The rest of the movie delivers its fair share of thrills and scares, including an extreme close up of the central alien threat, but it's this subway scene that really delivers.
