David Cronenberg has pretty much sealed his legacy as the greatest body-horror director of all time with classics such as The Fly and Videodrome, but one of his earlier efforts titled The Brood is just as riveting and skin-crawling as his best work.

Created by Cronenberg following his own divorce, the film follows a father whose wife is undergoing controversial therapy behind closed doors, as he tries to raise their daughter amid a series of gruesome murders.

It all flows just right to allow plot reveals to roll out at a gradual pace, but as any Cronenberg film it soon gets very weird, and very unsettling fast. The plot deals with gruesome body-horror, disturbing imagery, and scenes of intense violence as you'd expect, all framed with some images that will stay imprinted in your memory.

Oliver Reed is great as the compelling therapist, Haglan, and every scene he's in makes you incapable of turning away from the screen. The rest of the cast also does a terrific job as the film descends further from drama to terror.

It escalates constantly to an intense, bloody climax, and if you're a fan of psychological horror then The Brood is a flick not to be missed.
