12 Movie Deaths You Knew Were Coming (That Still Broke You)

8. Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (Probably) - Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid

In Bruges Colin Farrell Brendan Gleeson

This one is a two-for-one entry, because good luck trying to pick which of this pair you’d rather see survive at the close of this elegiac Western bromance. Yes, we were all charmed by Paul Newman’s carefree rogue and Robert Redford’s deadpan turn as his stoic life partner, but the pair were doubly doomed from the beginning of this iconic biopic.

Partially because they’re based on real people whose deaths are a matter of public record, but also because in their likeable, irascible search for freedom on the frontier, Butch and Sundance soon come to act as metaphorical embodiments of the dying old west. Good-natured but lawless, the film makes it clear that this pair of outlaws aren’t long for this world whilst also questioning whether the ruthless law and order which will replace their way of life is any less mercenary than their rootless existence.

Also we're aware that the pair could *technically* have survived this skirmish, but we're pretty certain they didn't fend off the entire army.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
