12 Movie Sequels That Luckily Didn't Happen

4. Casablanca 2

Gump And Co
Warner Bros.

There have been many attempts to follow up on 1942's Casablanca, and it's good to see that they've all fallen through. Whilst there was a '50s TV show (mercifully cancelled after one terrible season), an '80s show starring Ray Liotta (why?) and an all-female Japanese musical (yes, this is a real thing), a film following up on the exploits of Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund has never happened.

That doesn't mean it hasn't been attempted, however. A year after the first film, Warner Bros pitched a sequel titled "Brazzaville", which would have seen Rick and Captain Renault revealed to be Allied operatives. The studio hated this twist and the project was scrapped. Even Madonna has piped up with an idea, suggesting the original story could be remade in modern day Iraq. This was back in 2008, and nothing has been heard of this idea since, for obvious reasons.

The biggest proposed sequel idea was revealed in 2012 by producer Cass Warner, who wanted the film titled "Return to Casablanca" or "As Time Goes By." Warner had apparently been given the idea by Howard Koch, a screenwriter on the original film, and she said that making Koch's vision come true was something she aimed to achieve.

However, the idea - which would see Rick and Isla's illegitimate son, Richard, search for his father - was met with severe opposition from fans of the original, and since then nothing has been mentioned about a follow-up.
