A lot of you may have already seen Infernal Affairs, in a manner of speaking - it's the original film upon which Martin Scorsese's 2006 crime thriller, The Departed, was based.

As such, the two follow the same broad story beats, detailing the cat and mouse game between a mole in the police department, and a police officer who's undercover in the same gang the mole belongs to.

There are differences between the two, however. Infernal Affairs is more kinetic and fast-paced with a more in-your-face musical score, whereas The Departed is more restrained, slow (literally - it's nearly an hour longer) and a pinch more atmospheric - exactly what you'd expect with Scorsese behind the camera.

One isn't really better than the other - it really all comes down to personal preference. Want a slightly more streamlined, direct version of this story? Infernal Affairs is the one to watch.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
