Lawless director John Hillcoat is back with a dark, searing tale of cops and robbers set in downtown L.A., centring around a gang who plan to kill a cop so that they may pull off a big heist on the other side of town unimpeded - the rest of law enforcement being distracted by the prior 999 distress call meaning officer down (hence the title, Triple 9). From the look of the trailer, Mackie will be playing one of the corrupt cops who's a member of the gang of thieves, which also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Aaron Paul, Clifton Collins Jr and Norman Reedus. They pull scores for Kate Winslet's Russian gangster-lady, whilst hot on their heels are Casey Affleck's young rookie and Woody Harrelson's cynical Major Crimes detective. It's a stellar cast, an intriguing storyline, and anyone familiar with Hillcoat's output (which also includes The Road and The Proposition) will know that he doesn't pull any punches when it comes to his displays of gritty violence.
