12 Movies That Tried Too Hard To Innovate (And Sucked Anyway)
3. Serenity
Yikes, this was an absolute disaster.
This story of a man (Matthew McConaughey) who is actually a character in a video game and is the avatar of the father the game's creator (a young boy) lost in Iraq is another movie that's full of unique ideas which are completely mishandled.
The film taking place inside a video-game was an interesting idea but a concept like this should only be proceeded with if it can be done in a logical, cinematically interesting way. Unfortunately, with Serenity it felt like writer-director Steven Knight was just in love with the idea of this unusual mid-film twist and failed to put any thought into how the rest of the movie would work.
Thanks to its boring plot, terrible script, misjudged ending and its insistence on having ridiculous things such as McConaughey talking to a character called The Rules and then playing them completely straight, Serenity was one of the worst films of the last few years.
