12 Original Films That Could Be Big Hits In 2016
10. The Shallows
It’s been far too long since we’ve had a good shark movie.
The plot for The Shallows, which follows a young surfer (Blake Lively) who becomes trapped on a slowly disappearing reef while being stalked by a great white, is immediately intriguing. However, it’s the sort of one-person cast, one-location film that could easily fail if not executed well.
If the recent trailer is anything to go by, it’s safe to say they succeeded.
The trailer was such an effective way of setting up the intense plot, showing Lively badly injured and clinging to the reef as the tide rises around her and the shore just out of reach. And just when you’re at the point where you think this might be worth checking out, the final shot of the giant shark drifting below the surface seals the deal.
Thankfully, it seems like director Jaume Collet-Serra is taking the Jaws-approach and showing as little of the beast as possible. That has proven to be a much more effective technique than having a CGI shark popping out of the water every five minutes.
This is a case of the trailer really helping to sell the movie. There are few people that will see that 80-second clip and not have at least a little desire to check it out.
