12 R-Rated Comic Book Movies We Need To See After Logan & Deadpool

10. Spawn

Spawn Comics
Image Comics

Spawn is already coming, but it absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, needs to be the hardest of hard R-ratings. You'd assume that would be the case from the get go, but we've been here before, and while the marketplace was different back in 1997, the decision to tone down the violence to downgrade the R-rating it was slapped with to a PG-13 was a despicable one.

Even then, the 1997 adaptation - which deserves a second look, particularly now - was castigated for its over-violence and its confusing relationship with the superhero genre as a whole.

Thank God it's not 1997 any more. Spawn needs to be R-rated more than it even needs to be a superhero movie (which writer Todd McFarlane says it isn't, mercifully).

The Likelihood

According to Todd McFarlane, the film is definitely going to be R-rated. The issue right now, though, is whether it will ever lumber out of development hell, where it's been since 2007 (and before that, as a sequel, since 1998). You don't stay unmade for that long without a good reason.

But, the one thing it has going for it is that if a Spawn movie is EVER going to be made again, it's significantly more likely in a post-Logan and Deadpool world.
