12 Ridiculous Early Concept Designs Of Iconic Characters
7. The Predator
One ugly mother.
The canine-looking head on the reptilian body lacks the imposing presence of the dreaded final design, which looks extra-terrestrial and high-tech. That harmony between otherworldly power and ungodly tech kept the predator an enduring figure that constantly found itself in high demand, even appearing in Mortal Kombat X, a game it has nothing to do with.
Similar to Mortal Kombat, which was originally supposed to be Jean-Claude Van Damme The Game, Predator became what it is today because of Van Damme's stubbornness. Van Damme, who originally played the movie's signature slasher frustrated himself working in that atrocious suit, and frustrated directors by demanding that the Predator do some kickboxing.
With Van Damme promptly fired after making yet another demand to show his MMA talents, along with allegedly breaking the costume, the studio handed the design duty to special effects extraordinaire, Stan Winston, who had also worked on Aliens and Terminator. The new suit was filled out by actor and mime Kevin Peter Hall, who brought even more fear-factor to the alien hunter with his massive seven foot, two inch, frame.
While kickboxing aliens seem like something more befitting of a 50's B-movie, the idea still has some promise. Perhaps the alien kickboxer alien should mix it up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the octagon at some point.
