12 Ridiculously Macho Movies You Must See
3. Commando
Commando is one of the more ridiculous of the Schwarzenegger ‘80s action flicks, and given his run of action movies at the time this is truly an impressive feat in over-the-top film-making. The set up is wonderfully simple and gets the important killing of waves and waves of henchman underway without dallying with narrative development.
Arnie’s character, John Matrix, is a retired special forces soldier, living the quiet life with his daughter in the woods. When mercenary forces attack and kidnap her in a bid to forcing Matrix to overthrow a South American government, he has only one objective – rescue her and kill everyone else.
Commando was a bona fide VHS rental classic and retains its ability to entertain today. Arnie is on top form with some great one-liners and there are some fantastic bad guys throughout. The main antagonist is Bennett, an unhinged and overtly camp Vernon Wells, who is involved in the kidnapping purely on the basis of how much he hates Matrix, which all serves to set-up a classic final fight. Truly classic action from start to finish.
