12 Scariest Horror Movie Villains

9. The Babadook - The Babadook

Terrifier Art the Clown
IFC Films

Lurking in the shadows of a single mother's house, the Babadook is a storybook horror intent on tearing the family of two apart. Supposedly born from grief after the death of her husband, the Babadook is unavoidable in its pursuit of taking Amelia Vanek's son, haunting every aspect of her life until she's forced to face up to him. He's the bogeyman, the monster in the closet, and an invisible ghostly presence all in one: an entity that slowly swallows their lives whole as he intertwines himself into their reality.

He's indistinguishable from darkness and shown predominantly through a fairy-tale like pop up book that mysteriously ends up at the Vanek house, so the Babadook is scary enough - that is, until sound design comes barging in and ramps everything up to 11.
