James Cameron’s other ocean film is a strange, somewhat ponderous sci-fi flick following a group of marines who, along with the crew of an oil tanker, uncover unexpected secrets deep down in the eponymous trench.

By the end of the flick, Ed Harris’ captain Bud has saved the rest of the cast from destruction via nuclear warhead at the cost of his own life, at which point said aforementioned secrets are of course revealed to be of the trippy alien variety, as the extra-terrestrials take it upon themselves to save Bud’s life and reunite him with his love.

Originally, however, Bud was shown a montage of human-caused atrocities clipped from the news which the aliens used to justify aiming some mega-destructive mega-tsunamis at every major population centre on earth—only to reveal that Bud’s loving message to his wife caused them to have a change of heart. Cheers boys!
