12 Stupid Mistakes That Somehow Made It Into 2013 Movies

11. Gatsby Is A Time Traveller - The Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann's ostentatious adaptation wasn't a historical document by any means, especially in terms of the soundtrack, but the crucial thing was that the director's style was based on the clash between historical setting and more modern cultural flourishes - that is the entire schtick of the movie. So it's fairly stupid of his film-making team to have ignored the fact that Gatsby's telephone wasn't invented until around ten years after the film was set, and that one of Gatsby's infamous parties features a rendition of Rhapsody In Blue, a full two years before the song was written in 1924, or that Cab Calloway, who leads Gatsby's band, didn't start recording until 1928, six years after he appears in the movie. Is Gatsby a time traveller? Or Should Luhrmann just have been more committed to history?
