12 Superhero Movie Romances That Actually Didn't Suck
10. Peter Parker & MJ (Spider-Man: Homecoming)
Now, Spider-Man: Homecoming really only teased an impending romance between Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Michelle "MJ" Jones (Zendaya), but the bait-and-switch was so masterfully executed that it absolutely deserves a place on this list.
Ahead of the film's release, many suspected that Liz (Laura Harrier), the object of Peter's affection, would turn out to be a rebooted version of MJ, but alas, this was just a sleight of hand intended to keep audiences from guessing who the real MJ was.
Michelle meanwhile spends the entirety of the film as a minor background character until, at the very end of the movie, she reveals her nickname to Peter, and their cute chemistry is subtly played up.
That this happens mere moments after Liz tells Peter she's moving away following the capture of her villainous father Adrian aka The Vulture (Michael Keaton) is all-too perfect.
Homecoming ultimately just sets the table for the iconic comic romance, and it's clear from the Far From Home trailers that the sequel will lean more into their adorably awkward chemistry.
But in cleverly toying with expectations and sensibly not rushing through the early getting-to-know-you phase, this certainly earns its place in the annals of burgeoning superhero romance.
