Whilst Robert Rodriguez's zombie apocalypse movie (originally released as part of Grindhouse, alongside Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof) is best remembered as a thoroughly outlandish gorefest, it does have its fair share of hard-edged emotional realism - and a lot of this comes from Marley Shelton's anaesthetist Dakota. This is one of the more tragic entries on our list, as - despite her knack for pithy one-liners, and her cool yet medically questionable hypodermic needle gun - Dakota ultimately fails to save the life of her young son Tony, played by the director's own son Rebel Rodriguez. In a sweet twist, Rodriguez Sr didn't want Rebel to know he died in the film, and so shot alternate takes of other scenes which see Tony survive the movie, with the intent of only letting Rebel see that version until he was older. (Of course, some might question whether the kid was old enough to see Planet Terror in any form...)
