12 Underrated Horror Movie Gems From The 2000s
2. Brotherhood Of The Wolf (2001)
Set in 18th century France, Brotherhood of the Wolf follows characters Mani of the Iroquois tribe and the Chevalier de Fronsac on their journey into the province of Gévaudan. There, they are to investigate the bizarre mass slaughter of hundreds by a mysterious and monstrous entity.
The plot borrows from several real life curiosities in France at the time including an actual series of killings and the Beast of Gévaudan. Legend goes that the Beast of Gévaudan was an enormous, wolf-like creature that terrorised the Gévaudan province for several years, killing hundreds and leading to numerous investigations.
A cocktail of many film genres, Brotherhood of the Wolf boasts both martial arts and swashbuckling action scenes throughout. When the creature itself is finally revealed, its ghastly appearance is an impressive fusion of CGI with puppetry and animatronics courtesy of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
An epic, highly ambitious piece of genre breaking cinema, Brotherhood of the Wolf has something for everyone thanks to its action, humour, historical setting and scares. Beautifully shot and epic in its scope, Brotherhood of the Wolf is an excellent piece of escapism.
