10. Did Randy Die At The End? - The Wrestler

The Wrestler Ram

Darren Aronofsky's masterful sports drama ends in devastating fashion as Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke) climbs to the top turnbuckle and prepares to leap off, despite chest pains suggesting he's about to succumb to a heart condition he was diagnosed with earlier in the film.

Aronofsky cuts to black after Robinson jumps, the outcome of his landing and his eventual fate left ambiguous. Rourke himself has suggested that Robinson's heart explodes on impact, but Aronofsky has characteristically refused to confirm the truth either way.

It's certainly likely that Robinson does indeed die following the exertion as he leaps off the turnbuckle, but similarly, it's entirely possible this is merely a case of angina related to his condition, or perhaps a more serious cardiac event which he nevertheless actually survives.

But the tragic poetry of Robinson knowingly sending himself into the abyss in the quest of entertaining the fans and proving to himself that he's still got it is just too damn brilliant. Let's face it: Rourke's right about this one.
