The most enduring mystery of Quentin Tarantino's illustrious career is the unknown contents of the briefcase retrieved by Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent (John Travolta) for their boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) in Pulp Fiction.

Despite it being a prominent aspect of the movie, the audience isn't given much of a hint as to what the briefcase might contain, beyond an orange glow emanating from it and the case being opened with the combination "666" (aka the Number of the Beast).

By far the most common fan theory is that the briefcase contains the soul of Wallace himself, with the distinctive plaster on the back of his head indicating his soul was "sucked out" prior.

Tarantino has himself admitted that there's no definitive explanation, and though the briefcase was originally set to contain diamonds, he ditched the idea for being too generic.

Whatever's actually inside it, it's clearly of immense value to pretty much everybody, and it's quite telling that Ringo (Tim Roth) recognises it after setting eyes on it for just a few fleeting seconds.

The soul theory wins out because it's super creative and just weird enough to slot into the movie's universe, but ultimately, it can be anything you or the characters might consider worthy.
