6. Did Riggan Die? - Birdman

Birdman Ending Emma Stone
Fox Searchlight

Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Best Picture-winning drama concludes with protagonist Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) ending up in hospital after shooting himself in the head on-stage.

The final scene sees Riggan leap out the window of his hospital room, yet when his daughter Sam (Emma Stone) rushes to the window, she expresses not horror but elation as she looks up at the sky.

So...did Riggan really become Birdman for real or what? The most commonly accepted - and also the most obvious - theory is that Riggan in fact died after shooting himself on stage and the final scene, with its general tenor of optimism, is merely his dying hallucination.

Another interpretation suggests that the final visual of Riggan exiting via the window is simply a representation of him letting go of his own ego and embracing life.

Both the beauty and the frustration of Iñárritu's film is that countless interpretations are valid, and unlike most ambiguous movie endings, there doesn't really seem to be a particular one that the director is leaning towards.
