13 Awesome 2017 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)

5. Paddington 2

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100% (9.1/10)

Why It Deserves Best Picture: In addition to being one of the best-reviewed films of the year so far, Paddington 2 is quite possibly one of the best movie sequels ever made. Seriously.

A stunning improvement upon the enjoyable-if-flawed 2014 original, this follow-up is smarter, more visually inventive, features a better villain (Hugh Grant plays a schizoid washed-up actor), and boasts an incredible amount of heart to boot.

It's everything a family movie needs to be, but more to the point, it stands on its own two feet as a terrifically charming adventure film.

Why It Won't Get Nominated: Though it releases in literally dozens of countries before the end of the year, Paddington 2 won't hit U.S. cinemas until January 12th, making it sadly ineligible for Oscar contention.

Even ignoring that, though, Best Picture rarely invites family films to the table, and even then, it's generally Disney (Beauty and the Beast) or Pixar (Toy Story 3) fare.
