Why It Deserves Best Picture: A superhero movie for people who don't like superhero movies (or are just fed up with how generic they usually are), Logan's ultra-violence, character-driven narrative and emotionally devastating farewell to Hugh Jackman's title character make it one of the best films of the year.

More a bleak, nihilistic western than a conventional comic book film, Logan threw the rule book out the window and once again proved what can be done when studios take a step back and just let artists make art.

Why It Won't Get Nominated: While it could score a passion nomination for Patrick Stewart's excellent performance, most Oscar voters likely still won't take the movie seriously enough to consider it a real Oscar candidate.

At the end of the day, with its clone shenanigans and scenes of wanton violent dismemberment, to many it's still just another superhero film, and "too silly" to be worthy of the big one.
