13 Best Romantic Comedies Of The 21st Century
8. Knocked Up
The second entry for Judd Apatow and another example of how damn good he is at bringing true to life relationships to the screen. The film follows the aftermath of a one night stand between slob Ben Stone (get it, cos' he's a Stoner!) and 'It girl' Alison Scott. After an awkward hook up the two go their separate ways, until Alison finds out about an unexpected and largely unwelcome pregnancy.
The film takes its time and has great fun with the attempts of Ben and Alison to form a loving relationship, with the decision to create a workable relationship instead very befitting of the film. Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl's ability to create a dynamic yet awkward chemistry also works a treat.
A secondary romantic plot involving struggling couple Pete and Debbie is equally engaging, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann nailing the issues faced by couples when the honeymoon period is over.
What makes the Judd Apatow formula of Rom-Com's present here work so well is its relatability. The similarities to our own awkward one night stands and issues we face in long term relationships makes the humour and awkwardness hit home so much more.
If there's one down side about this movie, it is in its decision to remove arguably the best scene in the movie, featuring Heigl and Jonah Hill, who plays Ben's friend Jonah. Jonah's instigation of a conversation with Alison in regards the film Brokeback Mountain is wonderful, with worthy critiques of the film layered alongside a sort of coming out from the male character.
