13 Brilliant Plot Twists That Couldn't Quite Save Terrible Movies

11. Skyline - The Hero Becomes An Alien

Vanilla Sky Mask
Universal Pictures

The Twist: After the world is invaded by aliens who use lights to hypnotize and abduct humans, Jarrod (Eric Balfour) finds he is partially immune to their effects. Suspecting the way to defeat them lies onboard their ships, he allows himself to be abducted. Unlike what happens to other humans, who have their brains sucked out by a tube, his is instead put into the body of an alien.

It doesn’t stop there, though, and in his new alien body, he proceeds to rampage through the ship to protect his girlfriend. The movie ends as we see a montage of him trying to escape the ship with her.

Why It Almost Saved The Movie: Skyline is full of unlikable characters that spend the majority of the film doing little more than hide under a table. It rips off other alien invasion flicks and there’s little tension to be found amidst the generic action. Then the ending happens.

It’s not without warning that Jarrod essentially becomes an alien, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t ridiculously surprising how it all plays out. It’s nonsensical and unintentionally hilarious, but it’s so satisfying that it’s basically worth the entire film that precedes it.
