As human beings we’re wired to search for answers and try to find meaning in the most mysterious circumstances. As Internet users we’re wired to click through a million posts a day, each one scaring the crap out of us with a haunting story of a creepy unsolved mystery. When you put those two things together it's easy to be a little overwhelmed.

The solution to this feeling is simple: Hollywood must adapt our viral unsolved mystery obsessions into films. That way we can perhaps see those compelling stories told in a way that helps explain them. Or at least that terrifies everyone suitably, anyway.

Whether they’re created as Guillermo Del Toro gothic horrors, David Fincher-esque prestige thrillers, or a Paul Greengrass style shaky-cam conspiracy, these real-life, unsolved mysteries are ready for their moment in the spotlight. They’re also ready to creep under your skin and make you crawl into bed with a flashlight.

Lock the doors, call the guy you know who brags about his questionable connection to Hollywood, and find out which horrific mysteries should be coming to a theatre near you…

13. The Bodies Of Pauline Picard

Sodder Mystery
Le Matin

In 1922 a 2-year-old Pauline Picard vanished from her family’s farm in a small French village and just as her parents had lost hopes, she was found over 300kms away. Strangely, she didn't seem to recognise her parents, but she was identified by them (and neighbours) as Pauline.

All seemed well, but then, a month later, a neighbouring farmer found a pile of neatly folded clothes next to a mutilated corpse near the Picard property.

The clothes were what Pauline was wearing the day she disappeared, and next to the headless corpse was a skull from an unidentifiable adult male (the face had been partly eaten by foxes). Even weirder, the skull and body were seemingly placed near the Picard home after an extensive search of the area.

Whether the body was Pauline’s or not, who the skull belonged to, and who the girl was that was now living with the Picards remains a mystery to this day.

How Would The Movie Look?

There’s no doubt that the Pauline Picard movie would be an incredible thriller; something along the lines of Gone Girl or Silence of the Lambs. For the movie to work flawlessly it makes sense that Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller should take the reigns, as he’s proven he has the skill to turn something that’s gruesome, complex, and mysterious into a thing of beauty.

With a confounding role perfect for the next great child actor and two grieving, possibly misguided parents that could be played to perfection by Hannibal stars Hugh Dancy and Gillian Anderson, the Pauline Picard film is a thriller-lover's fantasy waiting to be made.
