Kill List, Ben Wheatley's brilliant folk horror film, is not only an all-around great movie, it's one of the most unpredictable horror flicks out there. Every step of the way, it's hoodwinking its audience and shooting off in many unexpected directions, delivering one shocking WTF moment after another.

Seriously, this is a movie that begins with two hitmen being sent out to kill three targets and ends with a deranged folk horror climax in which the protagonist (Neil Maskell) is tricked into killing his wife and son before being crowned king of a secret cult. That's not even mentioning the many other shockingly brutal scenes we witness along the way; most notably, it's hard to imagine many people will be able to watch the hammer scene without flinching.

Kill List is a 90-minute masterclass in shocking the audience, and it's hard to think of many other horror films that deliver so many out-of-nowhere shocks as this one does.
