13 Hyped Movie Roles That Were Total Cop-Outs
3. Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) - Green Lantern
On paper, Ryan Reynolds was a terrific casting choice for Hal Jordan in Martin Campbell's Green Lantern, and though Reynolds certainly did the best that he could with the material, he couldn't really do a whole lot to elevate the horrible script or Campbell's uncharacteristically awful direction.
Even accepting how weirdly generic it all is, the biggest problem with Green Lantern is forcing Reynolds to "wear" a fully CGI suit, which never once looks even remotely convincing and presents some of the most eyeball-assaultingly horrible VFX ever seen in a $200+ million movie.
Given Reynolds' failure to bring Deadpool to the screen in a satisfying way in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, fans were hoping this would compensate for that misfire, when instead it simply piled more embarrassment on top.
Reynolds has of course readily expressed his own disappointment with the film, and in perhaps the ultimate statement of such, Deadpool 2's mid-credits sequence saw Deadpool (Reynolds) assassinate Ryan Reynolds before he could shoot the movie.
It all worked out for Reynolds in the end of course, but with the right fusion of script, director and tone, this could've been an easy winner for him.
