13 Hyped Movie Roles That Were Total Cop-Outs

10. Ultron (James Spader) - Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Make no mistake, James Spader is an incredible actor whose velvety voice seemed absolutely perfect for the rule of paranoid android Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

And though Spader tries his absolute damnedest to make the role work, he's at the unfortunate mercy of Joss Whedon's bloated, tonally jarring script.

Rather than lean into the menace of the iconic supervillain as implied by the film's marketing, Age of Ultron makes him more of an eccentric goof.

Spader handles it about as well as any actor possibly could have and he isn't remotely to blame, but from Whedon's quip-packed script to Ultron's fairly unremarkable design, he was an absolute wasted opportunity.

Thank God for Thanos, right?
