In the run-up to Captain Marvel's release, we were told to expect answers to lots of major MCU mysteries, primarily including where the new hero had been since the 1990s and also how Nick Fury lost the use of his eye.

We'd already had hints of it, of course, because in The Winter Soldier he said "Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye." But the reality, established in Captain Marvel, is that Fury's eye was simply scratched by Goose the Flerken. And mostly because Fury was too affectionate and invaded her space.

So what... he just lied?

Captain Marvel makes other changes to Fury's past too. He's way less of an important, powerful figure in the 1990s than we'd been told he was previously. In Iron Man 2, it's established that he had a close working relationship with Howard Stark, meaning he had to have a high-level position before Stark's death in 1991. And then Alexander Pierce reveals in The Winter Soldier that he made Fury SHIELD Director after meeting him when he was the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Bogota Station.

In Captain Marvel, we find out he was way less important than that. He's only a Level Three agent in charge of a small local team, so the idea of him working closely with Stark or ever meeting Pierce professionally back then unlikely at best.
