It's actually relatively easy to understand why critics went so easy on the deeply flawed new Halloween.

After all, it was the first genuinely decent Halloween movie in literally four decades - since the first, in fact - yet the reception does seem a little too generous given the sequel's clear storytelling issues.

For starters, most of the new characters land with a thud, especially the first-act podcasters and the unnecessary teens, the latter led by Laurie Strode's (Jamie Lee Curtis) needless granddaughter character (Andi Matichak).

Then there's the painfully bad dialogue - most of it coming from said teens - the lame, out-of-place subplot involving Dr. Sartain (Haluk Bilginer), and a deflating ending following a terrific final showdown.

Halloween is a textbook example of "good enough", and though leaps and bounds ahead of every other sequel and reboot in the franchise, it could've been so much better with some simple script changes.
