13 Movies That Shocked At The Box Office In 2018
4. Overboard
Box Office: $91.2 million
This wretched remake of the almost equally bad 1987 rom-com starring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn came and went at the box office without much of a fuss, released a week after Avengers: Infinity War with a minimal marketing push and receiving predominantly negative reviews.
But against the odds, it's also one of the most quietly successful films of 2018 (cost-to-profit, that is), in large part thanks to the canny casting of Mexican comedian Eugenio Derbez, who is an enormous draw in Latin American markets.
Made on a sensibly scant $12 million budget, Overboard ended up grossing 7.6x that figure, with especially strong performances in the likes of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Mexico (grossing $26.2 million in the latter alone).
Talk about a sleeper hit.
