13 Movies That Shocked At The Box Office In 2018
8. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald
Box Office: $647.7 million
The latest entry into the Wizarding World franchise was neither a runaway success nor a dud. On paper it certainly appeared to perform well, easily tripling its hefty $200 million budget and turning in the profit margin many blockbuster films would kill for.
But for a Harry Potter film it's pretty damn soft, no?
The Crimes of Grindelwald was widely expected to blast past Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them's $814 million final cume and perhaps even cross the billion-dollar mark, but no dice.
In fact, not only did the sequel end up the lowest-grossing film of all ten Wizarding World films, it did so by an embarrassing margin of almost $150 million, being smoked by 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ($796.7 million) while not even grossing half of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2's $1.34 billion total.
While it hardly puts the future of the series in doubt - at least for now - it's not exactly an encouraging figure for the health of the franchise long-term.
