13 Movies You Loved As A Child (But Hate As An Adult)

12. Labyrinth (1986)

If you're still cut up over the death of David Bowie and have exhausted all of his music by now, you might be tempted to blow the dust off your VHS player and watch him kidnap some kids as Jareth the Goblin King in Jim Henson's Labyrinth. Don't. When 15-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) wishes that her brother would just disappear, she is overcome with guilt after it magically comes true. To rescue Toby from his captor, Sarah must conquer the Goblin King's maze, filled with strange creatures, mind-bending puzzles and endless adventure. Though it remains visually enchanting, watching Labyrinth as an adult is a disappointing and somewhat confusing experience. The whole thing seems to play like a cross between Alice In Wonderland and an episode of The Muppets, though without the charm of either. Henson clearly spent a lot of time crafting his fairytale creatures, and he wanted us all to know it - the director spends too much time showing off the craftsmanship of his puppets when he should have been progressing a story that reveals itself to be pretty thin on the ground.

Phil still hasn't got round to writing a profile yet, as he has an unhealthy amount of box sets on the go.
