13 Overlooked Films From Famous Directors

7. Martin Scorsese - Silence

Inherent Vice
Studiocanal

Martin Scorsese is undeniably a cinematic god and it's rare for any film of his to be greeted with anything less than critical adoration. For the most part, the 2010s have been very prosperous for him, but what is arguably his best film of this decade was a box office bomb with only a single Oscar nomination. How unfair.

Silence was a passion project two decades in the making and it's safe to say it was worth the wait. It is one of the very few memorable films from 2016 and it should've been a Best Picture contender. Silence is a true triumph and, given that it has all the cinematic power of Scorsese classics such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas, the muted reaction was ridiculous.

It's a truly shattering epic thathich is extremely emotional and explores religion in a very thought-provoking way that will speak even to non-religious people. As it should go without saying, it's also technically flawless and brilliantly acted as is always the case with Martin Scorsese. It's a film he should be proud of even if it wasn't met with the deserved levels of hype.
