13 Things You Didn't Know About Friday 13th Part III

12. It Began A Long Tradition Of David Bowie Tributes

To prevent an upcoming film's plot and production details being leaked to press, movie productions often take on a fake ‘working title’ to allay suspicion. Famously, Return Of The Jedi was named ‘Blue Harvest’ during production.

During the production of Friday The 13th Part 3, the cast and crew used a working title of ‘Crystal Japan’, named after a David Bowie song from (of course) 1980’s Scary Monsters & Super Creeps album.

This began an occasional tradition in the franchise of giving the productions David Bowie song titles as fake working titles. Skipping The Final Chapter, Friday The 13th: A New Beginning was ironically nicknamed ‘Repetitions’ by some wag at Paramount, which must have given everyone a little chuckle for five minutes.

Part VI: Jason Lives, on the other hand, went for the almost completely literal ‘Aladdin Sane’, while (skipping Part VII: The New Blood, which was just called ‘Birthday Bash’) Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan went for the more existential ‘Ashes To Ashes’.
