13 Things You Didn't Know About Friday The 13th
5. That Final Fight Was A Bruising Experience
The final fight scene between Betsy Palmer and Adrienne King, another night shoot, was a battering and bruising affair: there was no budget for stunt actors and Cunningham acknowledges that the idea of having stunt performers didn't really even occur to them.
The two women really went to town on the scene to ensure that it looked as good as it possibly could. As the night wore on, it got colder and colder, but adrenaline kicked in their fight-or-flight reflexes - King admits that Palmer really did pound her head into the sand, and that she’d had to give as good as she got or risk being beaten senseless by the stronger older woman.
The whole sequence had been written out by Cunningham in advance based on a handwritten, numbered list of set-piece scenes he wanted to incorporate. When he yelled 'cut' on the final shot of that scene, Cunningham threw the notes into the trash in celebration.
King was horrified and fished them out, intending to take them as a souvenir, maybe compile a collage using the polaroids she'd taken during the shoot. It was then that she noticed that there were thirteen points on his notes...
King, still an enthusiastic fan of the film to this day, did end up creating a piece of art including the notes, an original film poster - a print of which can still be purchased from adrienneking.com.
