13 Things You Learn When You Rewatch Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

3. The "I Am Your Father" Revelation Retains Its Power

I doubt there€™s a Star Wars fan alive (or film fan for that matter, or human) who doesn€™t know what the great plot twist of The Empire Strikes Back is. Obviously, rewatching the film by its nature ensures that it€™s doubly unsurprising, so I was a little shocked to find that the revelation retains its power. Said with nowhere near as much emphasis as I remembered (I was expecting €œI AM your father€), the line is more an admission that a grand declaration, and its lack of theatricality (slightly spoiled by Luke€™s screaming of €œNOOO!€ €“ a habit Lucas could do with breaking) adds to its effect as something vital to the plot and not just a WTF moment designed to turn heads. This is one of cinema's key moments, and it still feels it.
