13 Truly Heartbreaking Facts About Film In 2015

12. Fifty Shades Of Grey Grossed $570 Million Worldwide

That's right, on a budget of $40 million, a movie adaptation of an erotic Twilight fan fiction book grossed a mind-boggling $570.5 million worldwide, making it one of the year's highest-grossing films, all the more impressive because not only is it R-rated, but it's also absolutely terrible. Universal's genius marketing campaign managed to tap into the repressed housewife demographic perfectly, serving up a surprising tame sex movie that wasn't at all graphic, because of course, the sight of any actual genitalia would probably have those same housewives running for the hills in disgust. It's also grossly unrepresentative of the BDSM community and arguably irresponsibly so, considering how many people saw this film and will likely enact the dubious, arguably abusive practices it depicts. For all these reasons, it's astonishing that what's essentially a well-made softcore porno made over half-a-billion dollars, and to make matters worse, there are at least two sequels on the way.
