6. Is The Baby Simon's Or Gordo's? - The Gift

The Question: The movie ends with Simon (Jason Bateman) unsure as to whether his new baby is his, or his wife Robyn (Rebecca Hall) has been raped by his creepy former school friend Gordo (Joel Edgerton), the ultimate punishment for ruining Gordo's life when they were in high school. The Likely Answer: Though the film's true impact relies on both Simon and the audience never knowing the truth (even though Simon could easily get a paternity test), it's certainly more bracingly effective if Gordo didn't rape Robyn, because it makes him much easier to side with, making the film's subversion of expectations (that Gordo is a generic stalker creep and Simon is the nice middle-class guy) all the more effective.
