13 Unexpected Actors Who Might Win Oscars In 2020
8. Ansel Elgort (Best Actor - The Goldfinch)
The Role: Theodore "Theo" Decker, the survivor of a terrorist bombing at an art gallery which kills his mother and sets him off on a life of crime.
As an adaptation of a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Goldfinch is an easy Oscar bet from the jump, not to ignore the awards-friendly presence of director John Crowley (Brooklyn) and writer Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).
But the film could present a major career leg-up for Ansel Elgort, best known for his roles in the more populist The Fault in Our Stars and Baby Driver.
If Crowley can tap into the emotionally fraught nature of Donna Tartt's source novel, Elgort could very well deliver one of the year's strongest performances.
It's definitely worth noting that general critical reception to the novel was fairly mixed despite the Pulitzer Win, with some considering it too overwrought.
That said, the Academy proved with their love for Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book this year that they're not exactly above slushy sentiment.
