13 Unexpected Actors Who Might Win Oscars In 2020
6. Taika Waititi (Best Supporting Actor - Jojo Rabbit)
The Role: An ethnically inaccurate version of Adolf Hitler who is the imaginary friend of Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis), a young boy living through World War II.
Simply put, Jojo Rabbit sounds insane. Taika Waititi's follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok is a more stripped-back, lower-budget affair, filtering World War II through Waititi's uniquely demented comedic sensibilities.
And though the Academy hasn't embraced any of his feature films to date - though he does have a nod for his 2004 live-action short Two Cars, One Night - if his darkly funny, wilfully off-kilter portrayal of the Führer is suitably satirical, he could end up in the Best Supporting Actor conversation.
It is definitely a most outside possibility, simply because Waititi's Kiwi sense of humour probably isn't broad enough to jive with most Academy voters.
But with Charlie Chaplin having been nominated for his own comical depiction of totally-not-Hitler in 1940's The Great Dictator, there is precedent for similar roles being recognised.
Jojo Rabbit will struggle to maintain a high enough profile to court Oscar attention, but the presence of Scarlett Johansson as Jojo's mother should help plenty, and if the film becomes a breakout cult hit, who knows what might happen?
