The Plot: Deranged teenager Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is haunted by visions of a large bunny rabbit named Frank, who tells him that the world is going to end in one month. Most WTF Moment: As the countdown runs out, Donnie enters a time vortex and ends up back where the movie began. While he initially avoided being crushed to death when a jet engine fell into his bedroom because Frank summoned him out, this time no such event happens, and he is simply killed by it. In the wake of his demise, and in this timeline having never met his subsequent girlfriend Gretchen (Jena Malone), she has no idea who he is. Why It's Awesome: Fans of Richard Kelly's ambitious indie sci-fi have been trying to make sense of it for years, and to grasp the heady mechanics of the film's events, you really need to do your homework. Even so, with its fanciful terminology and complex web of ideas, it doesn't seem exceptionally logical. But that's part of the movie's appeal: it's an enigma to work out, but is also terrifically acted, beautifully shot and brilliantly scripted that it's extremely entertaining even if you don't really know what's going on. Think of it like a painting that you love to observe even though you can't stop asking, "But...why?"
