12. Gravity (2013)
Whilst being a film which undeniably raised the bar as to what can be achieved in getting the most out of the IMAX experience, Alfonso CuarĂ³n's Gravity is also one of those great isolation in space movies. No other setting can capture the sense of humanity's solitude and isolation than the vacuum of space, and Sandra Bullock's plight as an astronaut Dr Ryan Stone who finds herself tumbling adrift in space after a Russian missile launch on a satellite causes a chain reaction of Debris to strike her shuttle and the Hubble telescope during a space walk. The isolation of cinema's other great space explorers is put into perspective by Stone having to rely only upon her spacesuit and her wits to survive, in comparison she is essentially naked in space, but unwavering in her quest to make it to the International Space Station and ultimately home, displaying the strong instinct for survival that gets humans through even the most seemingly hopeless situations
