Why It's Disappointing: Again, like Ant-Man, the second Avengers movie is a perfectly acceptable comic book film, but it's just a very generic, template-driven effort which fails to really move the MCU forward in an interesting or imaginative way. Yes, Joss Whedon's witty dialogues still prevail and the digital action is a breezy blast to sit through, but it all feels too rote and familiar. The jokes don't land with the same impact as the first Avengers film, the stakes feel shockingly low, Ultron was somewhat mis-handled as a villain, and the film is clearly straining to contain the ridiculously large roster of colourful characters. How To Improve It: As painful as it is to say, let someone other than Whedon write and direct it. He did an adequate job, but a new creative voice probably would've come up with something more interesting and ambitious. Also, perhaps streamline the approach a little: the movie features so many characters and locations that it feels in a rush to power through things, with a perfunctory quip thrown in every now and then for good measure.
