Isn't it great when a terrible-looking movie you've given up all hope on turns out surprisingly awesome?

It may be rare, but a combination of low expectations and an inspired creative team working to make gold out of garbage can sometimes result in great movies coming totally out of nowhere.

Just take last year: would anyone have expected films like Deepwater Horizon, The Shallows, Ghostbusters, The Edge of Seventeen and Ouija: Origin of Evil to be as well-received as they were?

That's just a few examples, of course, and 2017 has already seen the likes of Wonder Woman, Cars 3 and Power Rangers surpassing most expectations, and that's with five months of the year still left to go.

So, which groan-worthy blockbusters might actually end up being unexpectedly satisfying? Which lame-looking horror flicks will prove pleasantly surprising? And can the DC Extended Universe start building a streak of successful movies? It's all still to play for...
