14 Upcoming Movies That Might Be Surprisingly Awesome

13. Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle Creation
Warner Bros.

Release Date: August 11

Why It Should Suck: Well, the 2014 original was a flaming pile of hot garbage, so there's not much of a reason to expect any different from this prequel penned by the very same writer, Gary Dauberman.

Why It Might Be Awesome: The film actually premiered at the LA Film Festival back in June and received surprisingly positive reviews, with particular praise for David F. Sandberg's (Lights Out) stylish direction and the consistently solid performances.

It currently holds an eyebrow-raising 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it's important to remember that early festival reviews are almost always highly positive. Remember when Blair Witch held a 100% rating coming out of its surprise Comic-Con screening, only to completely tank once the critical mass got their mitts on it?

At least there's very little chance of it sinking below the original film's 29% score, and if those early reviews really can be believed, then Sandberg hasn't merely pimped himself out as a hack-for-hire here, but actually deepened the mythos of the Conjuring universe.
